Decoupage Furniture Diy Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Fancy trying your hand at decoupage? Why not transform your interiors at the same time with a simple decoupage furniture project? We've got plenty of ideas to get you started.

The word 'decoupage' may sound a bit fancy, but it's actually one of the simplest crafts you can try your hand at. Taken from the French word decouper – meaning 'to cut out' – it involves pasting pieces of paper or fabric onto an object, like a table or a lamp, then covering with varnish or lacquer. Perfect for giving old furniture an instant lift!

Decoupage is such an easy, effective way to upcycle plain objects and use up that paper or fabric stash, plus you don't need to learn any tricky skills in order to do it well.

You can apply decoupage to practically any object that needs a bit of a spruce-up, from small ornaments to entire pieces of furniture. You can also paste large scale pieces of material, or tiny cut or ripped-up ones, depending on what you have to hand and the type of look you're after.

Here, 7 stylish decoupage furniture projects to get you started...

Who says coat racks have to be plain? The wood on our rack had been aged and we used printed tissue paper for the decoupage so the aged wood showed through.

Okay so not strictly furniture, but an easy way to update a tabletop or mantelpiece! Turn empty milk bottles into fun vases with this easy project. First spray paint your bottles a block colour – aim for three coats for a solid finish. While it's drying, grab some leftover greeting cards, wrapping paper – or whatever else you have lying around – and get cutting out pretty details to craft into patterns.

Once you've decided on your arrangements, add them to the bottles using a dash of Mod Podge, then varnish over. This is a really simple project that kids can have a go at too – get them to upcycle their cards and wrapping paper after a birthday, or cut out comics and magazines.

An easy weekend update, our craft team has put together this simple yet stunning decoupage project to transform a tired table into a gorgeous living room centrepiece using just a sheet of paper and some paint.

They've used a single sheet of floral paper but, if you prefer, cut out images you like and glue them to a backing paper to create your own 'poster'.

Decoupage is one of the easiest ways to upcycle plain furniture. It works particularly well for creating playful, coloured and patterned pieces for kids' rooms, which can be pricey to buy new.

This little stool can be used by children to help with chores, reach their toys or simply to have a rest on. Spray or cover with a couple of layers of chalk paint first.

If you want to fully show off the pattern on your paper, turn the stool upside down to trace the shape on the back, and use a Stanley knife to remove any cutaways. Apply it carefully bit-by-bit, starting from one corner, using a ruler to smooth out any air bubbles or creases that appear.

You can also encourage budding designers by getting the kids to choose the pattern and paint colours they want.

We've all got a few mismatched chairs hanging around the house, or stacked up in the garage. This pretty decoupage chair project is all you need to give them a new lease of life.

6. Decoupage lamp furniture project

Oh, we do love an Ikea hack! This subtle decoupaged interior adds a bit of interest to an otherwise plain piece, without screaming 'I'm homemade!'

The Rimson lamp, used here, comes disassembled, making it easy to decoupage. Cut some wrapping paper to size (this one's map print) and stick down in the same way as other projects.

This would make a great gift – you could use a map of somewhere that has special significance to the recipient, such as the place they went on honeymoon or a trip you took together.

Create a truly personal piece of furniture by decoupaging photographs or any other images that have special meaning to you onto it. Photocopy or print your pictures so that you don't ruin the originals, and have a play around with arrangements before glueing and varnishing.

This would make an absolutely stunning gift for a special occasion, such as a wedding or milestone birthday. Remember you can decoupage pretty much any type of paper, so don't be scared to really let your imagination go wild here.
